Near Liepaja, the main generator and colored metal were stolen from the overturned wind turbine, reported the owner of the managing wind farm company "Jaunmiki," Jānis Meisters, to the LETA agency.
According to him, he was last on the wind farm premises on Monday, April 27, at 21:00, and on Tuesday, April 28, around 11:00, the theft was discovered. Meisters noted that it likely occurred at night.
It is worth noting that during the day, a member of the Latvian government, Kaspars Meļņiks, personally visited the accident site. However, it is unlikely that the brazen theft and the minister's visit are connected.
The owner of the collapsed wind turbine, Jānis Meisters, specified that the main generator weighing almost two tons was stolen from the fallen turbine, indicating the use of heavy machinery in the commission of the crime.
Electrical cables and colored metal were also stolen — from the base of the turbine to its upper part, and smaller parts were unscrewed.
The damage from the theft is estimated to be around 3000 euros, Meisters assessed.
He added that the State Police has been notified of the incident, which has already examined the scene and requested additional information.
Commenting on possible suspects involved in the crime, Meisters noted that there is currently no specific information; however, considering the use of heavy machinery, it can be assumed that the perpetrators may be from the nearby area. The dismantling of the fallen wind turbine is planned to take place in the coming days.
As reported by bb.lv, on Sunday, April 26, a wind turbine fell in the Bunka municipality of the South Kurzeme region.
