The Vilnius District Council on Friday refused to rename streets named after Polish clergyman Henrik Gulbinovich, convicted of pedophilia.

In various towns in Lithuania, there are several streets named in his honor, which have been attempted to be renamed several times, but each time local authorities granted permission for this.

Born in the village of Šukštynė in the Vilnius district, Gulbinovich was the Archbishop of Wrocław and became a cardinal in 1985.

The Vilnius District Council awarded Gulbinovich the title of honorary citizen of the district in 2015.

The Vatican imposed disciplinary sanctions on the clergyman, who died in November 2020, due to numerous cases of sexual abuse of minors, covering up pedophilia crimes among clergy, and 16 years of collaboration with the security service of the Polish People's Republic.
