How Did Dogs Mutate in the Chernobyl Zone? An Expert Explains

Nuclear scientist Alexander Uvarov commented on the situation surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In particular, the rumors about mutant dogs living in the exclusion zone of the nuclear power plant.

“Six months ago, a paper by British scientists was published stating that they noticed dogs with blue fur in Chernobyl – supposedly, they turned blue due to radiation exposure. I think it’s simpler than that. The exclusion zone is full of abandoned enterprises, including industrial ones. Dogs could have climbed into some warehouse, rolled around in chemicals, and that’s how their fur acquired a blue color,” explained the expert.

Another matter, Uvarov noted, is that there have been serious scientific studies describing the effects of radioactivity on living organisms in the Chernobyl disaster area. But there is nothing sensational (let alone horrific) in these results for the average person – they are only of interest to scientists. The specialist reminded that people have long been living in areas affected by radioactive contamination.

“I have a Belarusian friend who has traveled all over the Chernobyl zone. When asked how dogs survive there, he calmly replies: ‘People feed them.’ Indeed, there are quite a few people living in the exclusion zone: these are self-settlers who have returned to their native homes, as well as scientists,” Alexander Uvarov provided examples. “So there isn’t really such horror that it is now a dead land.”

Let us remind you that the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster occurred exactly 40 years ago. On the night of April 26, 1986, during tests of a turbo generator, the reactor of the 4th power unit suddenly began to accelerate, the nuclear fuel overheated, the heat-generating elements were destroyed, and two powerful explosions occurred, completely destroying the power unit and leading to the release of a large amount of radioactive materials into the atmosphere and surrounding areas.
