By Lake Dzirnezers in the Carnikava municipality, where summer cottages used to be located, there are now private houses where people live year-round.
A fire broke out in one of the houses, and the flames spread quickly; however, rescuers first had to think about how to reach the building to start extinguishing it, reports the program Degpunktā (TV3).
The 170 square meter house that burned down is located in a picturesque spot by the lake. Despite the proximity of the water body, which could have facilitated faster extinguishing, the owners were forced to watch as the fire spread from the basement to the roof.
"There was a short circuit in the garage, and we didn’t know that something was burning. The child opened the door when the flames were already there. A small area was on fire. If the firefighters had been able to arrive immediately, nothing would have happened. The road here is built incorrectly, and both the Adazi municipality and the Carnikava municipality are informed about this. This is not the first such case. Cars could not get through. Only a small vehicle could pass," said the resident of the house, Dana.
According to firefighters' estimates, the house is beyond repair and will have to be rebuilt. The woman with children has a place to stay; relatives and friends will help clear the burned remains. The Social Service of the Adazi region also offered assistance. The Ametistu street leading to the lake is indeed narrow and winding. Even a passenger car has difficulty passing through it. Fences of private properties obstruct the way, and the condition of the road leaves much to be desired.
"A request was received from the applicant regarding the improvement of Ametistu street, not its expansion, and this request will be fulfilled. The works to improve the surface are included in the planned list. They will be carried out in this year's construction season," said Monika Griezne, head of the public relations department of the Adazi municipality.
The program also received a historical explanation. The narrow streets are located in the territory of the "Salūts" cooperative, created in the 1960s as a summer recreation area. The territory was once developed by the Ministry of Defense of the USSR, and neither the streets nor the infrastructure were designed for permanent residence. The municipality owns only the narrow road, surrounded on both sides by private property. Moreover, it cannot be widened without the consent of the owners.
