Under Surveillance: Almost 600 Cameras Monitor the Behavior of Riga Residents

The Unified Control and Video Surveillance Center of the Riga Municipal Police was presented in the capital of Latvia. The center will monitor order in Riga using a network of almost 600 surveillance cameras throughout the city.

The new Unified Control and Video Surveillance Center of the Riga Municipal Police is located at 26 Ledurgas Street. The total budget for the project amounted to €7.96 million for construction and about €1 million for equipping the center. Approximately 100 municipal police employees work there.

The change in priorities is noteworthy – the police center has been converted from the building of the closed Riga Secondary School No. 29.

They do not intend to stop at six hundred cameras. "It is necessary to continue developing the video surveillance network, expanding it with new cameras every year," noted one of the vice-mayors of Riga.

The new building allows for a twofold increase in the number of employees who will monitor public order and safety around the clock using the city’s cameras.

The new center building and the adjacent area have created infrastructure for training police officers: a gym, a hand-to-hand combat room, a sports ground, and a building for tactical exercises, which the municipal police did not have before.
