The whole school is waiting for his return: 12-year-old boy injured on the tracks

Last Friday, a 12-year-old boy was hit on the railway tracks. The teenager was crossing the crossing, allowing a train from one side to pass, but did not think that another train could be approaching from the opposite side.

Classmates and teachers wish the boy a speedy recovery and are eagerly awaiting his return to school, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).

Kristīne Sile, the deputy director of Riga Secondary School of Sarkandaugava, along with a teacher, showed the place where the fourth-grade student lay after being hit by a train. The new school week for students began with discussions about the incident that occurred on Friday after classes near the school.

Many children witnessed the serious incident in which their friend Auseklis was injured. Some students immediately called emergency services, while others ran to the school for help from adults.

"The school duty officer told me: Kristīne, one of our students was hit by a train! I immediately ran outside, approached the child, and realized who it was. I saw that nearby, children from the 4th grade were already calling an ambulance and the police; I asked if they had reported everything and requested them not to hang up. I stood and talked to Auseklis to keep him awake, not to close his eyes, not to move, and to stay safe," said the deputy director.

The class teacher contacted the boy's parents, and while the services were on their way, he spoke with his mother on the phone. Fortunately, Auseklis did not suffer head or spinal injuries; however, he has several fractures that will require a long period of bed rest and serious recovery. It is expected that he will be able to start the new school year with everyone in September. He and other children at the school will also receive assistance from the school psychologist.

The boy did not run onto the crossing without looking around. He simply did not expect that trains would be moving from both sides at that moment and did not notice that the traffic light was showing red.

The train did not hit him directly but brushed against him, and, as teachers say, possibly this time the heavy school backpack helped, which partially absorbed the impact. The backpack was thrown 30 meters from the scene of the incident.

Near the entrance to Riga Secondary School of Sarkandaugava, there are railway tracks, trams run, and, of course, cars also drive. The school talks a lot about safety on the streets, said the school's director Guntars Jirgensons.

Before the improvement of the crossing near the school, there was a person on duty who monitored the traffic. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, this position was eliminated. Currently, there is only one municipal police officer for three schools, but the director plans to request an increased police presence near the school during the hours of dismissal.

"Schools have the opportunity to participate in safety lessons conducted by the Latvian Railway, where children and youth are taught how to behave correctly and safely near the railway and on the train," noted Latvijas dzelzceļš representative Karina Muktuaule.
