A short circuit in the wiring disrupted the night’s peace for residents in a social house in the Bauska region.
Around 28 people were forced to leave the premises due to heavy smoke at about 2:00 AM, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
Fortunately, no one was injured, but the building will now require repairs.
The second and third floors of the social center in Saulāine are covered in black soot. Ceilings, doors, windowsills, and floors will need to be cleaned multiple times to restore them to their previous condition. Shortly before two o'clock in the morning, an electrical distribution cabinet caught fire in the hallway, quickly filling the premises with smoke and frightening the residents.
"The alarm went off. I woke up. There’s no light. Smoke."
A resident of the building reported that her apartment was the last from which evacuation took place, and firefighters helped her escape.
The woman noted that her daughter's health is fine now, but she will contact the family doctor just in case. Work has already begun in the building to restore electricity so that residents' daily lives are not disrupted.
The head of the Rundāle association, Aigars Sietiņš, also arrived at the scene after a call from one of the residents about the emergency. He expressed gratitude to the emergency services.
Currently, experts are expected to provide a conclusion on the causes of the fire, considering that it all happened at night when fewer electrical appliances are used and the load on the wiring is lower.
Sietiņš noted that it is currently impossible to accurately assess the extent of the damage, but the place will be restored in the near future.
