The citizen of Moldova who left a newborn on the street may be sentenced to five months of imprisonment.
The prosecutor's office has agreed to a sentence of five months of imprisonment for a citizen of Moldova accused of leaving an infant on the street in Kengarags last August.
The prosecutor's office reported that on August 19, 2025, the woman gave birth to a child at home in the bathroom and did not notify the Emergency Medical Service.
After that, she wrapped the infant in a blanket, took him out of the apartment, and left him on a path between private houses on Festival Street in Riga. Later, the child was noticed by one of the residents of the house, who brought him inside to warm him up and called for medical assistance and the State Police.
In making the decision to prosecute, the prosecutor classified the crime under the article of the criminal law regarding the intentional abandonment of a person in a life-threatening and health-endangering condition who is unable to protect themselves due to infancy and helplessness.
The prosecutor established that the woman had no intention of killing the child. This is evidenced not only by the mother's subjective attitude towards what happened but also by the objective circumstances of the act committed.
Firstly, the child was wrapped in a blanket, indicating the mother's desire to maintain the infant's normal body temperature for as long as possible. Secondly, the child was left by the fence of a private house, which indicates the intention to leave him in a place and under conditions where he could be quickly discovered by passersby or residents of nearby houses, as indeed happened.
At the same time, according to the norms of the law on the protection of children's rights, the mother was obliged to care for the newborn; however, instead, she left him without assistance on the street, thereby putting the child's life in danger.
Assessing the severity, nature, and harm of the committed crime, the personality of the accused, as well as the fact that the woman fully acknowledged her guilt and exercised her legal right to cooperate, the prosecutor concluded a plea agreement with her regarding the admission of guilt and punishment, which must be approved by the court.
According to the reached agreement, the prosecutor requests the court to impose a sentence of imprisonment for the accused for five months and 15 days. In the prosecutor's opinion, the chosen punishment is proportionate and appropriate, and it may serve as a warning to others.
It was previously reported that the child has been placed under the care of a foster family.
