"Stabbed like a pig": Jurmala pensioner to be prosecuted for the brutal killing of a neighbor's dog

The State Police proposed to charge the pensioner for the killing of a neighbor's dog in Jurmala, the police reported to the LETA agency.

On March 22, the police received a call in Sloka. The dog owner reported that another resident on the street had stabbed her German Shepherd dog.

The information gathered by the police indicates that the woman's dog, while in the yard of the house, ran out past the fence upon noticing the neighbor's dog, which was off-leash next to its owner.

The woman's dog attacked the smaller dog. Both neighbors separated the animals, and considering that the German Shepherd was larger, the owner tied it to a post, thereby eliminating any further threat.

Despite both dogs calming down, the owner of the smaller dog ran into the house, grabbed a knife, and, returning to the tied German Shepherd, stabbed it several times. The dog died on the spot from the inflicted wounds.

"The neighbor ran into the room, came back out, and saw that my dog was tied to the post. He took a knife and stabbed her three times — right in front of my eyes! I immediately called the police. At first, I thought the dog could still be saved, but I was told that she was already cold. For three days after that, I couldn't speak. After the incident, I gradually started to talk again. Then I cried, emotions took over," said the dog's owner, Daina, in an interview with TV3. "My dog was barking. So what? The neighbor's dog started barking too. In the end, the neighbor ran out into the street — and in one moment, it all happened. Stabbed like a pig, excuse me! First, he stabbed twice in the ribs, and one stab was in the mouth. At that moment, in shock and thinking that my dog was still alive and could be saved, I said to her: 'Nero, let's go back to the yard!'. Nero just lay down first on one side, then on the other — and that was it. I wouldn't wish such a scenario on anyone!"

Law enforcement gathered sufficient evidence in the case and on March 30 sent the criminal case in an expedited process to the Prosecutor's Office of the Riga District for the initiation of criminal proceedings against the man born in 1953.

The criminal law for cruel treatment of an animal resulting in its death provides for imprisonment for up to five years, probation supervision, as well as a ban on keeping certain or all types of animals for up to five years.
