The municipal police reported that last year only 48 citizens of third countries were detained. Less than one a week.
The municipal police checked a total of 7,927 foreigners, of which 812 during demonstrative raids conducted in the area of the Central Train Station and the Bus Station. Surely, border guards at the airport check significantly more foreigners arriving in Riga by plane.
The excitement raised by particularly motivated deputies was more than the actual result. But they are not giving up.
"Checks will continue because Riga should not become a place where illegal residency is taken for granted," announced one of the vice-mayors of the capital.
The police received far more calls from concerned citizens about violations of the Traffic Rules by their fellow citizens – over 75,000! This means local drivers must worry the police almost 2,000 times more than non-local travelers.
And more about traffic: with the help of covert (non-stenciled) special vehicles, the municipal police of the capital recorded 93,000 speed limit violations: more than 250 violations per day.
