The young men accused of arson of Latvian railway infrastructure in the interests of Russia caused damage amounting to €372,014, the LETA agency has found.
In early March, the State Security Service (SSS) transferred the case materials to the prosecutor's office against two citizens of Latvia accused of arson of railway infrastructure objects in the interests of Russia.
Both men are accused of assisting a foreign state in activities directed against another state, as well as intentionally destroying someone else's property. They doused relay cabinets, a lighting distribution cabinet, and a diesel locomotive with flammable liquid and set them on fire; a total of five episodes of arson have been recorded.
One of the accused established contacts through messengers with individuals associated with Russian interests and agreed to commit arsons for a reward, recording them on video for propaganda purposes.
The victims recognized are the state-owned company "Latvijas dzelzceļš" and the joint-stock company "Baltijas tranzīta serviss"; the total amount of damage exceeds €386,000.
The accused have not yet expressed their stance on the charges. They were detained in September 2025 and are currently in custody.
