The incident occurred during the "Milan – San Remo" cycling race on the descent from the famous Cipressa climb, less than 20 km from the finish of the 156-kilometer route.

Several athletes were injured, with the most serious injuries sustained by Deborah Silvestri, who flew over the barrier and fell from a height of 5 meters as the cyclists tried to avoid a collision.

Silvestri was taken to the hospital. Her team, Laboral Kutxa, reported that the 27-year-old athlete was conscious during transport and that further information about her condition would be provided later.

Two race favorites, Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Kim Le Court Pienaar, were also caught in the crash. Niewiadoma was unable to continue the race, while Pienaar managed to get up but finished only 99th. Lotte Kopecky took the victory.
