Berlin has seen a sharp increase in counterfeits: the capital is flooded with fake euros. In 2025, 6,925 counterfeit banknotes were identified in Berlin. This is 77% more than the previous year. Thus, the capital demonstrates a noticeable increase, despite an overall decline across Germany. According to the Bundesbank, around 68,000 counterfeit banknotes were identified throughout Germany in 2025. This is 6.1% less than in 2024.

On one hand, the decrease is associated with a reduction in the number of counterfeit large denominations. On the other hand, criminals have switched to simpler schemes. As a result, the total damage amounted to about 4 million euros — approximately half a million less than the previous year.

Which banknotes are counterfeited most often

The most popular target for fraudsters remains mid-denomination banknotes. This is explained by the fact that they are used more frequently in everyday transactions and raise less suspicion.

Distribution of counterfeit banknotes in Germany:

50 euros — 33,956 cases;

20 euros — 16,198 cases;

100 euros — 2,954 cases.

It is clear that almost half of all counterfeits are 50 euros.

In the capital, the picture generally matches the national trend, but there are important differences.

How the situation is in Berlin

50 euros also leads — 3,374 cases (about 53%).

Surprisingly, banknotes of 200 euros took a high second place — 823 cases.

20 euros were discovered 690 times.

The number of counterfeits of large denominations has increased sharply.

Increase in counterfeits by denomination:

200 euros — +239%;

5 euros — +173%;

500 euros — +112%;

50 euros — +90%.

Thus, criminals are actively experimenting; in Berlin, one can encounter fake euros of all tastes and various denominations.

The risk of cash transactions is increasing

The Berlin police emphasize: counterfeit money is a mass crime. This means that fraudsters use any opportunity.

Risks arise especially often when:

selling goods through online platforms;

cash transactions without verification;

meetings at night.

Criminals often offer payment without haggling to speed up the deal and lower vigilance.

The police recommend a simple rule: “look, tilt, feel.” These actions help to identify a counterfeit without special equipment.

Main methods of verification

Feeling. The paper is thick and rough, the printing elements are slightly raised.

Light check. The watermark and security thread are visible.

Tilt. The holograms change the image, and the numbers change color.

Magnifying glass check. Microprinting and clear lines are visible.

UV light. Individual elements glow.

Even basic attentiveness allows one to avoid most risks.

Counterfeit coins are also in circulation

In addition to banknotes, counterfeit coins are actively circulating in Germany.

In particular, in 2025:

more than 117,000 counterfeits — these are 2 euro coins (91%);

about 8% — 1 euro coins.

It is important to know: counterfeit coins are more magnetic, look shinier, and weigh less than the original.

What to do if you receive a counterfeit

If you receive a suspicious banknote, you must act immediately.

Correct actions:

hand over the money to the police;

do not attempt to use them again;

if possible, remember the circumstances of receipt;

It should be noted: compensation for counterfeit money is not provided by German law. Moreover, knowingly using a counterfeit carries criminal liability — up to imprisonment.
