Estonian Navy Minesweeper Sustains Damage – Iranians Not Involved

The Estonian Navy minesweeper Admiral Cowan sustained damage this week due to ice conditions and has been sent for unscheduled repairs.

"On March 16, while exiting the territorial waters of Estonia, the minesweeper EML Admiral Cowan sustained damage due to exceptionally difficult ice conditions, which is why the vessel is undergoing unscheduled repairs," said the public relations officer of the Estonian Navy in response to an inquiry from ERR.

He confirmed that this incident concerns only one ship and that the other minesweepers of the Navy are operational and ready to carry out assigned tasks.

The Navy did not specify the severity of the damage, the ice class of the ship, or the cost of repairs.

ERR's news desk received information that another Navy ship, the patrol vessel Raju, also sustained damage. The Navy stated that this information is not accurate.

Admiral Cowan is the first of three Sandown-class minesweepers purchased by the Estonian Navy from the United Kingdom. The other two minesweepers are named Ugandi and Sakala.

Admiral Cowan was transferred to the Estonian Navy in April 2007.
