State Police officers completed the investigation of the criminal case regarding the attempted murder that occurred last Christmas in Ludza. A man born in 1954 was detained on suspicion of committing the crime, and a preventive measure — arrest — was applied to him.
On the evening of December 25, 2025, officers from the Northern Latgale Division of the Latgale Regional Department of the State Police received information about an attempted murder in Ludza. Law enforcement promptly responded and, during operational activities, detained the alleged perpetrator — a man born in 1954.
During the investigation, it was established that while consuming alcohol together, the man born in 1954 inflicted bodily harm on a man born in 1978. It is known that he struck the victim several times on the head with an axe and inflicted a stab wound to his neck. The victim was taken to a local medical facility.
It is noted that the court chose a preventive measure for the detainee — detention.
In connection with the incident, the State Police initiated a criminal process under Article 116 of the Criminal Law — for the intentional unlawful deprivation of another person's life (murder). Such a crime is punishable by life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term of five to twenty years with probation supervision for up to three years. Additionally, proceedings were initiated against the individual under part four of Article 15 of the Criminal Law — for attempted crime, that is, intentional action (or inaction) directly aimed at its commission, if the crime was not completed for reasons beyond the control of the perpetrator.
On March 11, 2026, officers from the Investigative Department of the Northern Latgale Division completed the investigation and sent the criminal case to the prosecutor's office to initiate criminal prosecution against the man born in 1954.
The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until their guilt in committing the crime is proven in accordance with the law.
