"It has been an honor for me."

High-ranking U.S. Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino announced his resignation. Previously, Bovino, who became the main public face of President Trump's anti-immigrant campaign, was removed from leading operations in Minnesota.

Bovino oversaw operations in Democrat-controlled cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Minneapolis, where federal agents shot two U.S. citizens during confrontations.

He was removed from his position shortly after federal agents shot activists Rene Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota in January, which sparked mass protests and criticism of the Trump administration from Democrats and the public.

Earlier, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, whose department oversees the Border Patrol, was removed from her post.

Bovino told Breitbart News that he would leave the agency upon retiring at the end of March. Thus, his nearly 30-year career in immigration enforcement comes to an end.

"It has been an honor for me to work side by side with Border Patrol agents at the border and in the interior of the United States under the most challenging conditions this agency has ever faced," he said.

The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to BBC's request for comment.

Bovino joined the Customs and Border Protection — the largest law enforcement agency in the Department of Homeland Security — in 1996.
