A curious accident occurred at the intersection of Ulbrokas and Deglava streets in Riga — one car, so to speak, "climbed" onto the hood of another.
An unusual traffic accident reflects the transport chaos that has been causing drivers to feel anxious for several days during the mornings and evenings, while public transport is falling behind schedule. What is the city's plan regarding the repair works that create dangerous situations, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
The curious collision on Tuesday occurred due to uncoordinated movement. A Hyundai car was changing lanes on Deglava Street when an Opel was driving in the adjacent lane.
The Hyundai forced the Opel driver to unwittingly become an automotive stuntman — after the impact, the Opel practically ended up on the hood of the Hyundai. The vehicles remained in this position until late evening when they were towed away. The Hyundai driver was found at fault.
"No one was injured in the accident. The State Police have initiated an administrative process and decided to impose a fine," said State Police representative Lina Bagdone.
Recently, there has been serious traffic congestion at the accident site. Cars in the right lane are forced to merge into the left — often drivers do not yield to each other, and even public transport has to fight for space.
And all this is due to repair works at the traffic light. Here, workers dug a not very wide and deep hole a week ago, and although the work is ongoing, local residents have already started using it as a trash bin.
This hole at the intersection is far from the only one: excavations are taking place in several locations, barriers have been installed, and traffic is restricted in certain areas.
On Wednesday, a drilling rig was brought to the work site, which was operated remotely by Ainārs. He told the show Degpunktā that they are laying underground electrical cables here, and besides the earthworks and drilling, workers often have to observe drivers who are facing difficulties due to changes in traffic organization and the holes.
He noted that the work is not abandoned — much has already been done together with colleagues, and soon the problems for drivers in this area may come to an end.
However, the Riga City Council is not so optimistic: the city reports that the repairs at the intersection will be fully completed only by April 14. Until then, drivers are advised to be patient or choose alternative routes during peak hours.
