On Tuesday in Riga, an elderly woman directed her car into roadside trees on Jaunciems Highway. The consequences of the accident are serious — the woman has been taken to the hospital.
Firefighters from the Jaunciems depot arrived after police established that the crashed car was dangerously tilted towards the cliff. Additionally, medical personnel needed strong hands to place the injured female driver on a stretcher, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).
While traveling on Jaunciems Highway, the passenger car crossed the oncoming lane and crashed into trees by the road. Just a few more meters and the car could have rolled into the ravine. After the incident, firefighters had to disconnect the battery terminals to prevent a fire.
The car, having not hit any other vehicles, crashed on a rather sharp turn where the speed limit is only 30 km/h. More serious consequences were narrowly avoided, as there is heavy traffic on Jaunciems Highway, a significant portion of which consists of freight transport. The female driver, an elderly woman, had no opportunity to mitigate the risks as she suddenly felt unwell.
"The driver of the vehicle was injured in the traffic accident and has been taken to a medical facility with her injuries. The State Police is currently continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident," explained State Police representative Lina Bagdone.
The obstruction to traffic on Jaunciems Highway was cleared within two hours.
