On Monday at noon, a large number of rescuers gathered at a five-story building in the Riga district of Darzciems — a fire broke out in an apartment on Sitā Street, and acrid smoke quickly spread through the building, hindering residents from evacuating, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).
Women from the fifth floor, who went out onto the balcony, were waiting for firefighters to help them get out of the building, as reported by TV3. The stairwell on the fourth and fifth floors was heavily smoke-filled, and attempting to evacuate on their own was dangerous. On the other side of the building, rescuers were already checking apartments and communicating with residents using a ladder truck.
Meanwhile, in the yard, "Degpunktā" met several residents of the building who were breathing fresh air and watching the firefighters at work.
"At first, I was just sitting, playing, and I smelled something. Well, I thought — maybe someone is burning something. Then they started knocking on the door, I heard the sirens. We quickly gathered and went outside. We inhaled some smoke. I don’t know who lives there. But, obviously, they are not home right now. Maybe the wiring caught fire or something else. Or maybe someone drunk fell asleep," said Vladislav, who evacuated with his dog.
One of the residents of the neighboring building noticed a tenant from the apartment on the fourth floor where the fire occurred.
"The person is very nice. He goes to work every day, he is a good person — just consumes what he shouldn’t. I hope he is alive and well," said Dace, who lives in the building across the street.
According to available information, he is indeed alive and well — no one was home in the apartment at the time of the fire. The causes of the incident are still unknown; however, in general, an area of about 10 square meters was burned — household items and the front door were on fire.
A total of 10 people were evacuated: five left the building on their own before the rescuers arrived, and another five were brought out from dangerous areas. Four people were injured, but they did not require hospitalization.
