Two Meteorological Balloons for Smuggling Discovered in the Madona Region

Last night, two meteorological balloons used for smuggling were discovered in the Madona region, said the head of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Puyats, in an interview for the TV3 program "900 Seconds," reports LETA.

Puyats noted that there are people who do not want to work honestly, and it would be naive to hope that opportunities for easy earnings would not be exploited.

The head of the border guard assessed that this winter the situation was generally calmer due to weather conditions — for example, it was impossible to transport smuggled cigarettes across the frozen Daugava.

In spring, however, the risks will increase, Puyats acknowledged, predicting attempts to use the Daugava for these purposes, as well as balloons and unmanned aerial vehicles.

At the same time, he emphasized that the situation in Latvia is far from as dramatic as in Lithuania.
