Over the weekend, three deceased individuals were retrieved from water bodies, with two of them having fallen through the ice, while three people who fell through the ice were rescued, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) reported to the LETA agency.
On Saturday night, a call was received on Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics Boulevard in Riga, where a person fell through the ice of the canal. Firefighters rescued the person and brought them to the shore, where they were handed over to the emergency medical service medics.
On Saturday, a call was received in the Madona region, where three people fell through the ice on a lake. Rescuers saved two people who were on the ice, brought them to the shore, and handed them over to medics. Another person was retrieved from the water, and medics pronounced them dead.
Yesterday, a deceased person was retrieved from the Daugava River in the Ogre region and handed over to the State Police.
Also on Sunday, a call was received in the Ādaži region, where a person fell through the ice. Rescuers used a rescue board to bring the person to the shore, where medics pronounced them dead.
Firefighters remind that the ice on water bodies is currently very dangerous. As the air temperature rises, the thickness of the ice decreases, it becomes loose, fluctuations in water levels break it, making it even more dangerous. Currently, going onto the ice is extremely hazardous.
