Cocaine Worth a Million: Largest Drug Seizure in Riga in Six Years

During a sanctioned search in one of the apartments in Riga, the State Police seized approximately 11 kilograms of cocaine and three kilograms of marijuana. This is the largest amount of cocaine seized by the State Police since 2019.

Working in the field of drug enforcement, the State Police tracked down individuals involved in drug trafficking in the Riga region. These individuals were primarily engaged in the distribution of cocaine.

On March 8 of this year, officers from the 4th Bureau of the Criminal Police of the Riga Regional Department of the State Police arrested men born in 2000 and 2002. They had not previously come to the attention of the police.

During a sanctioned urgent search at the residence of the man born in 2002, approximately 11 kilograms of cocaine and three kilograms of marijuana were discovered and seized. In the apartment of the second suspect, another 10 grams of cocaine were seized, and during a personal search, 20 grams of marijuana were found on him. The value of the seized substances on the illegal market is estimated at around one million euros.

In connection with the incident, a criminal process has been initiated under part three of Article 253.1 of the Criminal Law — for the illegal acquisition, storage, transportation, or mailing of narcotic substances with the intent to sell or for the illegal sale of narcotic substances, if committed by an organized group or in large quantities. Such a crime is punishable by imprisonment for a term of five to 15 years with or without confiscation of property, as well as probation supervision for up to three years.

On March 10, the State Police proposed to apply a measure of restraint in the form of detention for the suspects. However, the court, assessing the circumstances, did not impose arrest, so measures of restraint not related to deprivation of liberty were applied to them.

In the interest of the investigation, more detailed information about the suspects' role in the crime and other circumstances of the incident cannot be provided at this time.

The State Police reminds that no person is considered guilty until their guilt in committing a crime is proven in accordance with the law.
