Ramming: In Latvia, a police car crashed into a BMW twice

On the night from Friday to Saturday, February 28, police officers in Ventspils discovered a speeding BMW. The police decided to ram the vehicle to apprehend the driver.

The police activated the flashing lights and siren on their service vehicle; however, the vehicle did not stop and began to flee.

The car continued down Lielais Avenue, where it ran several red lights at intersections.

During the pursuit on Ganibu Street, the car's speed reached 152 km/h in a zone where the speed limit is 50 km/h.

The vehicle continued on a local road. Given that the driver did not stop, continued to ignore the lawful demands of the police, and posed a serious threat to road safety, a decision was made to ram the offender's vehicle at the intersection. The first attempt was unsuccessful, so a second ram was executed. After the collision, the BMW finally left the roadway.

The police demanded that the driver exit the vehicle, but the man initially did not respond and only left the car after some time. Upon the first breath test, the breathalyzer indicated the presence of alcohol; however, the man refused a second test.

As a result of the incident, there were no injuries, but both vehicles sustained damage.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the man for violating traffic rules, manifested in aggressive driving after repeated demands by an authorized officer to stop the vehicle, as well as criminal proceedings for refusing to undergo an alcohol test.

Additionally, administrative proceedings have been initiated for speeding, running a red light, and failing to comply with the requirement established by traffic sign No. 513.

The driver faces penalties up to imprisonment, as well as the loss of driving privileges and substantial fines.
