The official reaction of the monarchy is detached regret.

His Majesty's Police have released a statement that the suspect has been released "under investigation" after being detained on suspicion of misconduct in public office. This means that the investigation is ongoing, but no charges have been brought against him yet.

Previously, all British newspapers, except for the Financial Times, published on their front pages a photo of the former prince leaving the station in the back seat of a police car.

According to media reports, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (66) is suspected of abusing his position during the time he held official roles. From 2001 to 2011, Andrew was the UK's special representative for trade and investment, responsible for promoting British business interests abroad. Andrew stepped down from his position after his connections with American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of sexual crimes, pedophilia, and human trafficking, became known (Epstein, according to official reports, committed suicide in prison in 2019).

In October 2025, Charles III stripped his brother of the title of prince, as well as all other titles and privileges due to his connections with Epstein. Previously, Andrew had voluntarily formally renounced the title of Duke of York.

This week, as AFP reminds, British police reported that they are considering information that the former prince may have provided Epstein with confidential materials.

From the array of documents related to the Epstein case, published by the U.S. Department of Justice on January 30, it appears that Andrew may have passed reports of his official trips to Singapore, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, as well as confidential details about investment opportunities to the financier.

British special representatives for trade are not allowed to disclose confidential or commercial documents. Reuters notes that abuse of power or failure to adhere to the principle of good faith in public office is punishable by a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, and such cases are tried by a jury, as are the most serious criminal offenses.
