According to forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, a rise in air temperature is expected in the capital in the coming days, which may lead to icicles falling from building roofs, the municipality reported.
In this regard, the municipality advises residents of Riga to be particularly cautious when moving along buildings, and their owners to clear roofs of snow, ice, and icicles.
The capital's council warns that fencing off areas where snow or icicles may fall from roofs is only permissible as a temporary measure during roof cleaning work.
Two years ago, a pensioner died in Riga when an ice block fell from a roof. The tragedy occurred in the Latgale suburb, on Kalna Street, 62, when ice fell from the roof of an apartment building, injuring and killing a man born in 1941.
The owner of the dangerous building was somewhat punished: he apologized, paid the relatives of the deceased 15,000 euros, and received supervision from the probation service for a period of one year and three months.
