Riga residents are urged to come to terms with the slowed traffic, the Riga City Council reported. The number of accidents has already exceeded the average daily figure.
Given the impact of weather conditions, the local government urges residents to consider the slowed traffic, including possible delays in public transport, and to plan for additional travel time in advance.
City authorities promise to clear snow from the roads as much as possible. A total of 112 units of equipment are involved in the work. Snow removal will continue in the evening and at night.
According to forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, snowfall will continue until the evening.
Meanwhile, accidents are occurring here and there. On Friday, from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, a total of 160 traffic accidents were registered in Latvia, which is significantly higher than the average on working days.
According to the State Police, during this time, five traffic accidents with injuries were registered in the country, four of which occurred in the Riga region. The highest number of accidents without injuries — 86 — also occurred in the Riga region.
On normal snow-free days, the police register about 100 accidents per day on average.
