Lithuanian border guard officers detained a person who illegally entered Lithuania from the Kaliningrad region of Russia over the frozen Neman River, the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (SBGS) reported on Wednesday.

On Sunday evening, border guard officers located near the city of Panemunė recorded a person crossing the Neman River from the Kaliningrad region into Lithuania using a surveillance system.

Soon, the man who illegally crossed the state border was detained by the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (SBGS).

It turned out that the detainee is a 68-year-old man with triple citizenship: Russian, Irish, and German.

A pre-trial investigation has been initiated regarding the illegal crossing of the state border. The law provides for a fine, arrest, or imprisonment for up to two years for such a criminal offense.

On Tuesday, after interrogation, the foreigner was released on bail.

This is already the third person this year who illegally crossed the border of the countries and was detained by border guards. Two other violators did so out of negligence.
