One carelessly left candle forever changed the life of one family in Bauska, reports Degpunktā (TV3). The unattended flame destroyed the house, leaving three people without shelter.
“This is how the candle caught fire. It was on a saucer, the saucer cracked — and it ignited.” Thus, according to neighbors, the fire broke out in the house on Sport Street. In recent days, local residents have been in despair due to the misfortune that, although it did not take any human lives, left a family without a roof over their heads, clarifies TV3.
It all started on a late Friday afternoon. An 87-year-old woman lived on the first floor of the wooden house, and her daughter lived on the second. The ill-fated candle was in the elderly woman’s kitchen. When the fire started, she hurried to inform her daughter about what had happened, but due to mobility issues, she could not do it quickly enough. By the time she reached her daughter, the fire had already spread throughout the room.
Degpunktā managed to meet the daughter herself, who was too upset to talk for long. She only confirmed the neighbors' words: “She walks with two crutches. She is disabled. She crawled upstairs, knocked on my door, and told me to call the fire department.”
Rescuers from the station in Bauska arrived with two crews and immediately got to work — the woman and her mother managed to evacuate themselves, and it took an hour to extinguish the fire. According to the firefighters, household items, the floor, and a wall over an area of 25 square meters were burning.
The residence burned to such an extent that it will likely have to be demolished. The woman moved her mother to another family member, and she received temporary housing from the city of Bauska.
