The court proceedings regarding the case that occurred in June in Ogre and attracted widespread public attention have concluded, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3). The BMW driver, along with his girlfriend, drove into the Daugava River — there was suspicion that he was under the influence of drugs. The prosecutor's office has published the results of the investigation and the final court decision.
Last summer, one of the most unusual traffic accidents in recent years occurred in Ogre — a man driving a BMW drove onto a pedestrian and bicycle path and then headed towards the Daugava River, as noted by TV3.
After reaching a concrete slope, he soon rolled into the river. For some time, the driver and his female passenger were on the roof of the car, while their "water adventures" were observed by both emergency services and local residents.
When the driver was brought to shore, the State Police immediately became interested in his condition. Suspicions of drug substances in his blood were confirmed after an examination at the hospital. Subsequently, a criminal case was initiated, which led to a trial. More than six months later, the Zemgale Court completed the case review. Charges were brought under several articles.
"For driving a vehicle under the influence of narcotic substances without the appropriate category of driver's license. And also for the illegal acquisition and storage of a psychotropic substance without the intent to distribute," explained the representative of the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Latvia, Ieva Šomina.
The accused admitted his guilt and reached an agreement on punishment with the prosecutor. The prosecutor specified: "Imprisonment for three months and ten days, with a five-year driving ban. The court also ordered the accused to pay the full cost of the vehicle, amounting to 6,500 euros, to the state.
