Caring for road safety on the highways of Latvia, the State Police's Department of Road Transport Supervision continued regular and targeted inspections in the freight transport sector in 2025, conducting over 9,000 inspections and initiating 3,038 administrative processes, including identifying a case where the actual weight of a truck exceeded the permissible limit by almost 30 tons.

A total of 9,219 freight transport inspections were conducted in 2025, including checks on the transportation of dangerous goods, cargo securing inspections, dimension checks, and actual weight control of vehicles. Of the total inspections, 46% concerned foreign carriers, while 54% involved Latvian ones. A total of 3,038 administrative processes were initiated for various violations.

Additionally, 161 passenger transport inspections were conducted throughout the year, of which 25% involved foreign carriers and 75% involved Latvian ones. As part of these inspections, the State Police also checked 271 companies, paying special attention to road safety and potential risks.

Great attention was paid to the technical condition of vehicles and the safe transportation of goods — out of 9,219 inspections, cargo securing was checked in 3,960 cases, and dimensions were controlled in 3,110 cases. Furthermore, actual weight control was conducted in 334 cases, of which 284 violations of permissible weight were identified.

One of the most serious violations in 2025 was a case involving a logging truck, where police officers identified an excess of the actual weight of the vehicle by 29,682.5 kg. This logging truck, with Lithuanian license plates, was recorded with 14 administrative violations: seven against the driver and another seven against the company. The total amount of fines was €29,100.

The State Police's Department of Road Transport Supervision monitors freight transport daily on all highways in Latvia. In this regard, the police remind that overloaded vehicles and non-compliance with working and resting hours seriously threaten the safety of both drivers and other road users.

The State Police also urges residents to report such violations by calling 112.
