The Riga City Court will begin hearing the criminal case against an individual with dual citizenship of Estonia and Russia at 10:00 today for attempting to violate established EU sanctions — he attempted to smuggle 10,000 rounds of ammunition across the Latvian border to deliver to Russia, the court informed the LETA agency.
According to information available in the court calendar, the accused is Ruslan Motuz (Ruslanas Motuzas).
As reported to the LETA agency by the prosecutor's office, the accused hid packages with ammunition in the driver's cabin of the vehicle under the sleeping area, wrapping them in black bags and placing them in a toolbox.
Continuing to carry out his criminal intent, on September 27, 2025, the man attempted to transport the ammunition across the Latvian border to deliver it to the territory of Russia.
The accused was unable to complete his criminal plan, as at the Terēhovo customs control point, officials from the Customs Department of the State Revenue Service, after conducting a thorough inspection of the vehicle, discovered the hidden ammunition and detained the individual.
In response to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, the EU has banned the direct or indirect sale, supply, transfer, or export of firearms, their parts and essential components, as well as ammunition and their components to Russia, with criminal liability provided for violations of this ban.
It was previously reported that before the case was transferred to the prosecutor's office, it was investigated by the Security Police.
As a preventive measure, the individual has been placed in custody.
