The women's prison in Riga established during Stalin's era will host Saeima deputies

On Tuesday, February 10, deputies of the Saeima Defense, Internal Affairs, and Corruption Prevention Commission will visit the Ilguciems women's prison.

During the off-site meeting, the deputies will discuss current issues related to the activities of the Prison Administration, as well as visit the Ilguciems Prison.

The only women's prison in Latvia — Ilguciems Prison — was established in 1946, functioning as a women's correctional labor colony specializing in sewing production during the Soviet period. After the restoration of independence, the prison was gradually transformed into a partially closed institution with investigative, juvenile, and open divisions.

Ilguciems Prison is a closed prison with an investigative isolation unit and a correctional facility for juveniles.

Before the establishment of a specialized place of imprisonment for women in Ilguciems, women in Latvia were placed in urban prisons in separate sections.

During the interwar period, women became increasingly involved in various crimes, and they constituted a significant portion of prisoners in jails. In the Riga urgent prison and other cities, women were mainly engaged in workshops and laundry, but before World War II, female imprisonment was still not centralized in one institution.
