On Wednesday, Riga rescuers were called to Libagu Street in Bierini — there was heavy smoke in one of the abandoned sheds. Three people were injured — two women and a man. There was speculation in the area that the cause could have been homeless people trying to warm up with inappropriate fuel, without a stove or any other heater, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).

A resident of Bierini, Martiņš, was struck by natural curiosity when firefighters with sirens appeared on his quiet street, and thick clouds of smoke rose over the neighboring property. As he approached, the man saw rescuers carrying out the injured, writes tv3.lv.

"They brought out three, one looked really bad, it seemed that he was hurt more than the others. As for whether someone wanted to warm up — I don’t know," says Martiņš.

He says this because, in theory, there shouldn’t have been anyone on the property. No one has lived in the house and the adjacent utility shed for more than fifteen years. According to Martiņš, the injured were apparently homeless people who were unsuccessfully trying to warm up.

The house and shed have an owner — a man named Vladimir, who has long been trying to get rid of these buildings, but according to him, he has not been able to sell them. It is clear that Martiņš's call during the fire added to his headaches.

"I called him and informed him," says Martiņš.

In a conversation with Vladimir, it turned out that indeed homeless people had climbed into his shed to shelter from the cold. Although the man does not support the presence of outsiders on his land, he cannot be angry about what happened. It turned out that he knows the injured and has heard how hard it has been for them this harsh winter.

"I know them, I know two of them. Well, how — by name. They walk around here all the time, helping someone stack firewood, this and that. They lived in a doghouse there. They were evicted from there by the Riga City Council. Then they lived in the bushes, there, behind the bowling alley. Then they sat at the bus stops. Now they are dying — one recently died at a bus stop," said Vladimir.

The injured homeless people were taken to a burn treatment center after the fire, and Vladimir plans to visit them, noting that he will not remain indifferent to these people.
