A fire occurred in one of the apartments in the Teika district of Riga while some residents of the building had already gone to sleep. Fortunately, neighbors from nearby apartments were still awake and noticed the smoke. This allowed them to timely warn others and evacuate without the involvement of rescuers. However, the culprit remained trapped within four walls.
"The History of Vodka" and "Homemade Alcohol Production" — such books were lying near the building along with other burned household items. Neighbors say that the apartment owner had such books for a reason — he loved to drink and often smoked indoors. The incident did not come as a surprise to locals, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
A neighbor from the adjacent apartment reported that at the moment firefighters broke down the door, the owner of the burning apartment was conscious.
A neighbor living below the burning apartment witnessed the door being opened. Before the rescuers arrived, he heard loud banging. He thought that the man above was moving furniture.
"I was standing there, on the landing below. Well, I looked to see what was happening — I saw fire on the floor. There was fire on the floor, and someone was lying down. I don’t know who was lying there — the neighbor or someone else," said the neighbor below.
He continues: "They say he is in serious condition. (...) I don’t know if he was drunk or not. I can’t say, I didn’t see. (...) But what I saw from above — he was lying on the floor. And there was fire on the floor. (...) Open flames."
The firefighting efforts took three hours, resulting in the burning of a 30 square meter area. Neighbors were concerned whether the water used for extinguishing would flood other apartments.
"I had leaks in four places. Well, overall, it was fortunate, fortunate... I was already thinking of calling the insurance company, but it was only leaking in the corners, so basically — the guys did well. The firefighters acted quickly. And I will say that they didn’t flood, because they went in, looked — there was nothing there. The neighbor was at work. He called me in the evening. He asked — did they break down the door? I said: no, your door is standing," said the neighbor below.
