The cloud of smoke that attracted the attention of Riga residents to the sky on Saturday afternoon rose from a hangar in the Teika neighborhood. Fortunately, the fire resulted in no injuries, covering an area of 500 square meters.
The smoke from the burning hangar was so thick that it could be seen from several kilometers away. Everyone was curious about what was burning and why, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
At the scene, the Degpunktā reporters met influencer Erik, who, like others, speculated about the reasons for the incident. He said that the hangar caught fire, and due to the threat of exploding gas cylinders, the nearby area was evacuated.
The causes of the fire are currently under the jurisdiction of the State Police. However, what is already clear to the rescuers is that the fire was noticed too late, which allowed it to spread over such a large area.
The fire occurred at a metal processing company and covered an area of 500 square meters. By the time the rescuers arrived, the hangar was already engulfed in flames. Access to the building was initially difficult, as gas cylinders were exploding inside, and firefighting was conducted using aerial ladders from a safe distance.
In addition to gas cylinders, there were also tires in the hangar, which made the smoke particularly acrid and black at first. No one was injured in the incident, and despite the flames covering the entire area of the hangar, there was no threat to neighboring buildings.
The fire and rescue service urges witnesses not to remain indifferent and to call the responsible services in a timely manner so that they can respond quickly. In this situation, it can be concluded that people saw what was happening but did not call the firefighters.
The fire was extinguished only after eight hours of work.
