In Latvia, 18 insured cars were stolen last year, which is 38% less than in 2024, the Latvian Association of Insurers (LAS) reported to the LETA agency.

Among the stolen cars were four BMWs, three Hyundais, two Toyotas, Volkswagens, Mercedes Benzes, and Renaults, as well as one Škoda, Subaru, and Ford each.

The average age of the stolen cars last year was 11 years. The oldest was manufactured in 2004, while the newest was from 2022. Cars produced between 2015 and 2021 were stolen most frequently.

The association notes that the highest number of thefts in the last ten years was recorded in 2017, when 372 insured cars were stolen. After that, the number of thefts sharply declined, except for 2020, when there was a slight increase compared to the previous year.

The president of the Latvian Association of Insurers, Jānis Abašins, expressed hope that this positive trend would continue and that car thefts would become even rarer.

According to Abašins, this is influenced by both the maturity of society and the work of the police, as well as the economic situation in the country — if economic development is stable, people have no interest in engaging in such risky and complex actions as car theft. At the same time, he noted that it is more difficult to eliminate the activities of international criminal groups, which remain quite active in this area.

Abašins also emphasized that the number of thefts is decreasing, despite the fact that the total number of insured cars is growing each year.

In 2024, 29 insured cars were stolen, in 2023 — 51, in 2022 — 71, in 2021 — 65, and in 2020 — 177.

The insurers' data on the most stolen cars differs from the official police statistics, as the Latvian Association of Insurers only collects information about vehicles insured under KASKO policies.
