Starting this evening, it is officially allowed to cross the Daugava on ice in Riga. This was officially prohibited on Sunday, and the police were inundated with phone calls from some Rigan residents complaining about others.
Municipal police responded to numerous calls regarding people on the ice in areas where their presence was prohibited at that time.
The municipal police did not fine any residents who walked on the ice of the Daugava during these days, but conducted preventive conversations whenever possible, said police representative Ieva Lukaza-Apalupa to the LETA agency.
During the weekend, videos and photos were published on social media showing residents moving on the ice of the Daugava in the center of Riga. The municipal police's water safety department was informed about these incidents.
At the same time, monitoring of the ice conditions on the Daugava from the Cable Bridge to the Rumbula area was carried out to ensure its condition and thickness throughout, explained Lukaza-Apalupa.
Today, additional information was disseminated that it is allowed to be on the ice of water bodies in Riga, including sections of the Daugava.
However, hydrologists continue to remind that the responsibility for their safety lies solely with those who cross the Daugava.
