A Canadian soldier serving in a NATO brigade died near Riga

On Thursday, January 29, Gunner Sebastian Halmahean, who was in Latvia as part of the 'Operation Reassurance' mission and served in the Canadian-led multinational NATO brigade, died near Riga, the Canadian Armed Forces reported, according to LETA.

The Canadian military police, in cooperation with the State Police of Latvia, is investigating the circumstances of the death. At the same time, a statement from the Canadian Armed Forces emphasizes that this incident does not pose an additional threat to the safety of the troops stationed in Latvia.

Halmahean served in the Canadian artillery unit and was attached to the air defense unit of the multinational NATO brigade in Latvia. He had served in the army for nearly three years. This was his first overseas deployment.

In connection with the soldier's death, condolences were expressed by the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, and the Commander of the National Armed Forces, Kaspars Pūce.
