In the past 24 hours, 200 traffic accidents were registered, one of which resulted in the death of a cyclist, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.
The police explained that the number of accidents was higher than usual compared to days without snowy weather.
In the Riga region, there were 109 traffic accidents. Eight of them involved casualties — a total of nine people, including five pedestrians and one cyclist.
In one of the incidents in the Riga region, a cyclist was killed. According to the police, around 16:00 on Ageneskalna Street, the cyclist lost control and fell. The person died at the scene. The State Police is investigating the circumstances of the accident.
One person was injured in the Kurzeme region, where a total of 20 traffic accidents were recorded.
In Zemgale, there were 35 accidents, in Latgale — 27, and in Vidzeme — nine. There were no casualties in these regions.
Meanwhile, the State Fire and Rescue Service reports that yesterday at noon, a call was received from the Iecava municipality in Bauska County, where a passenger car went off the road and overturned on its side. Rescuers freed two people and a dog from the car and then pulled the vehicle back onto the road.
In the field of road traffic, 386 administrative offense decisions were issued, including 89 for speeding and 10 for aggressive driving.
Additionally, one administrative and five criminal proceedings were initiated for driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
