Business Strives to Trade with Russia and Belarus: Thousands of Sanction Violations Identified in Latvia

The Customs Department of the State Revenue Service (SRS) identified 4,356 violations related to non-compliance with sanctions imposed against Russia and Belarus last year, the SRS reported.

This includes the prevention of the export of nearly 1,340 shipments subject to sanctions from the European Union (EU), as well as the import of 120 shipments into the EU from Russia and Belarus.

The State Revenue Service (SRS) explains that in 82% of cases regarding shipments whose export from the EU was prohibited when crossing the Latvian border with Russia or Belarus, the customs procedure was initiated not in Latvia, but in other EU countries.

The export of goods such as vehicle and agricultural machinery parts, measuring instruments, motorcycles, medical goods, and cash was prohibited from the EU.

The import into the EU from Russia and Belarus most frequently included the prohibition of flax briquettes, wood products, urea, residues of vegetable oils, bitumen, cosmetic and hygiene products, and diesel fuel.
