This year, nine people have already died in fires in the residential sector, the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPRSS) reported to the LETA agency.
Despite the fact that the number of fires has remained at last year's level, their consequences are much more tragic: in 18 days, nine people have died in fires, 36 have been injured, and 78 have been rescued, the service acknowledged.
As low air temperatures persist, people are looking for ways to warm up - actively using heating devices and turning on electric heaters. During this period, the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPRSS) notes an increase in the number of fires caused by improper use of heating devices.
The GPRSS urges everyone to remember that each resident is responsible for the safety of their home. Fires related to heating can have severe consequences: posing a threat to the life and health of people, as well as causing significant damage to property.
Experience shows that people most often make tragic mistakes when they overheat the heating stove, do not close the doors of heating devices, pour hot ash into a cardboard box or plastic bucket and place them in closets, take them out to the veranda or porch.
In addition, common mistakes include drying clothes and shoes on heating stoves or electric heaters, as well as placing easily flammable items on heating devices or in close proximity to them.
The service also noted that fuel or flammable liquids are often used to ignite heating devices, which can lead to a flash, cause burns, and provoke a fire.
Alongside this, during the cold season, firefighters respond daily to numerous cases of soot igniting in chimneys, indicating that residents have not cleaned their chimneys before the heating season or have burned garbage and other materials not intended for heating in heating devices. As a result, a new layer of soot rapidly forms on the walls of the chimneys, the GPRSS explained.
Firefighters urge residents whose parents or other relatives use wood-burning stoves to discuss the rules for the proper and safe operation of heating devices with them, as often long-standing habits incompatible with fire safety requirements become the cause of fires.
Smoke detectors provide timely warnings of fire outbreaks, the GPRSS reminds.
It was previously reported that on the morning of last Friday, two children died in a house fire in the village of Krustkalni. The TV channel TV3 reported that the mother of the deceased children is in serious condition in the hospital. Their third child - a four-year-old girl, also injured in the tragedy, is currently being cared for by the staff of the Children's Hospital.
