The Christmas tree that one family in the Riga neighborhood of Imanta was planning to throw away after a visit from guests became a source of flames. The fire, which spread to the tree, destroyed part of the apartment. The fire broke out in a sixteen-story building, from which 36 residents had to be evacuated, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).

The burned tree destroyed part of the apartment located on the 15th floor of a residential building.

One of the residents, Alla, came to assess the extent of the damage. She also recounted how the fire started:

"I was in the kitchen and only heard that something was burning. Then I ran there with a wet towel. The tree was already ablaze. The police looked and said that there might have been a short circuit because the area around the switch was burned. Our tree didn’t have any lights."

The family does not decorate the tree with lights, as the husband’s mother prefers other decorations, and they believe that the version suggested by the investigation about the outlet is indeed the real cause of the fire. Unfortunately, Alla's husband currently needs treatment: he tried to save the family pet—a Labrador—that had already run out of the apartment by that time.

"Well, everyone is alive, my husband is in the hospital with a burned face. Yes, we were running, I only burned my hair and eyebrows because we were running with the dog. It was burning; we had to leave quickly. But what to extinguish it with? Everything was in smoke. We couldn't even reach that device; everything was in smoke. But when we got the dog downstairs, because there was nothing to breathe, the firefighters had already arrived, and we showed them where it was burning. They arrived very quickly," Alla recounts.

She says that her family is currently temporarily living with acquaintances. At this moment, help from caring individuals would be very useful to return to a normal way of life as soon as possible. If you have the opportunity to help the affected family, please contact Alla at 29332253.
