Five Citizens of Latvia Detained for Illegally Entering Russia

Early on Saturday morning, five individuals crossed the Estonian-Russian border at Lake Teploe; they were detained by Russian border guards. It later turned out that the violators were citizens of Latvia, reported the Estonian publication Postimees.

On January 11, around 7:20 AM, an Estonian border guard on duty at Lake Teploe discovered that five individuals had left the territory of Estonia and proceeded to Russia.

They did not have to wander around Russia for long – a Russian hovercraft that arrived at the scene transported the violators to the border.

The Latvians had to sit in custody for two days. In the afternoon of the same day, a border representative from Russia reported that the detainees were citizens of the Republic of Latvia. After a meeting that took place on Monday at 12:00 PM, they were allowed to return to Estonia.

However, Latvian citizens at the Estonia-Russia border are not that surprising. The level of cosmopolitanism can be even more intense.

On January 9, at the Koidula border checkpoint when leaving Estonia, border guards checked three citizens of Israel and found that they had been in the Schengen area without legal grounds for four days. Two Israelis were banned from entry for six months, and one for three months.

On January 10, at the Luhamaa border checkpoint when leaving Estonia, border guards discovered an illegal citizen of Azerbaijan. The man was ordered to leave Estonia, banned from entering the Schengen area for one and a half years, and fined 200 euros.
