Last week (from December 22 to 28), fraudsters swindled at least 236,954 euros from residents of Latvia, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.

Last week, the police registered 139 cases of fraud. In 42 cases, people lost money, while in 97 cases, the fraudsters' attempts ended without financial losses.

Fraudulent calls continue to be the most common, where scammers impersonate employees of utility services, police, mobile operators, the State Revenue Service, the State Social Insurance Agency, credit institutions, postal services, or social services.

In most cases, the fraudsters ask victims about cash that needs to be declared. Communication occurs via 'Whatsapp'.

Last week, people lost the most money due to investment fraud.

'Financial experts' offer to invest in cryptocurrencies or stocks, creating the illusion of high returns and encouraging people to invest increasingly larger sums of money. In this way and similar methods, fraudsters managed to swindle 114,250 euros, with the highest number of such cases registered in the Riga region.
