It Started: Rescuers Received Dozens of Calls from Troubled Residents of Latvia

On Saturday until 20:00, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received 41 calls regarding incidents caused by strong winds, the service reported.

In most cases, trees fell onto the roadway, and in some cases — onto power lines.

In Ventspils on the Great Avenue, rescuers dismantled a roofing panel that had been torn off a five-story residential building, and in Aizpute of the South Kurzeme region — scaffolding that had detached from the wall of a house and threatened to fall onto the sidewalk and roadway.

In Kurzeme, there were 13 calls regarding wind-related incidents, in the Riga region — 12, in Vidzeme and Zemgale — six each, in Riga — three, and in Latgale — one.

Sometimes it is difficult to reach the scene of the incident. On Saturday evening, in the eastern part of Latvia, many roads were icy, warns the company "Latvijas valsts ceļi."

For instance, the Valmiera highway was icy from the bridge over Brasla to Valka, several sections of the Vidzeme highway, the Daugavpils highway from Pekalne to the Latvia border, as well as all major state roads in Latgale.

Within a radius of several dozen kilometers around Rēzekne, the road conditions are particularly poor — due to the thaw, ice forms on these roads.

As reported by bb.lv, today residents of Latvia received a message from the state emergency situation center. It states that dangerous gusts of wind of up to 25–28 m/s are expected on Sunday night. The wind may tear off roofs, uproot trees, and bring down wires.
