“Many are scared and confused”: intelligence services commented on the explosion in Tallinn

After the explosion on Saturday evening at the Ülemiste shopping center in Tallinn, the Security Police did not see any signs of terrorism or extremism.

As reported by bb.lv, on December 20, an explosion occurred on the first floor of the Ülemiste shopping center in Tallinn. The Security Police Department (KaPo) has initiated a criminal investigation. An explosive device was triggered in a waste bin containing household waste, resulting in injuries to a shopping center employee. The injured person required hospitalization, but their life is not in danger.

"At this moment, there are no signs that the incident is related to terrorism or extremism. The threat level has not increased, and the available data indicates that this is an isolated case," said KaPo Director General Margus Pallu.

Experts from the Rescue Department checked all waste bins in the shopping center overnight and confirmed that there are no other devices.

"An explosion in a major shopping center in Estonia on the eve of the holidays certainly causes fear and confusion among many. To support the sense of security among the residents of Estonia, we have decided to increase the presence of law enforcement and make them more visible in crowded places during the holiday season. Based on the available information, we can say that there is no reason for people to change their behavior," said Egert Belichev, Director General of the Police and Border Guard Department.

The police also contacted all shopping centers in Estonia and their security services and sent them instructions on what actions to take.
