On Wednesday, the State Border Guard (SBG) and the State Police discovered two balloons with smuggled cigarettes in the Augšdaugava and Līvāni regions, the SBG reported to the LETA agency.
While checking the received information, border guards in the Nauen municipality discovered a meteorological balloon with smuggled cigarettes attached to it. During a search conducted together with the State Police, 31,800 'NZ' cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps were found.
Also yesterday, in the Rojup municipality, State Police officers discovered another such balloon with 31,200 'NZ' cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
In both cases, the State Police initiated criminal proceedings for the illegal transportation of tobacco products in large quantities.
The State Border Guard and the State Police urge the public to report such items by calling 112.
