Recently, residents of a multi-apartment building in Salaspils began to notice a strong and unexplained smell. For several days, uncertainty reigned, and the entire building was inspected until it finally became clear that the stench was coming from one specific apartment. There, a long-missing neighbor was found, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).

Firefighters with a ladder had to ascend to the balcony on the fourth floor of a residential building in Salaspils. That day, it was not flames but something else that prompted resident Zhanna to call for help. An unbearable smell had been emanating from the neighboring apartment for ten days.

"Well, you know, it was such an unclear smell. I felt something like this for the first time. I checked the whole house, looked around. Maybe the kids threw something somewhere. Well, it was a sweetish, well, disgusting smell," says Zhanna, who was the first to notice it.

While Zhanna was worried about the strong smell in the stairwell, her neighbor's friends could not understand for several days why their friend was not answering their calls. Eventually, action needed to be taken together.

"Well, it lasted a whole week, and then we met this man's friend. And he said that he wasn't picking up the phone. Well, then we called the specialists. They opened the door and said that he had died," Zhanna recounts.

"And then we went up to the fourth floor, opened the balcony, and he was there. He wasn't lying down, but just sitting, leaning against the back of the sofa," says the deceased's friend Valentin.

No noise, no sound — he left this life unnoticed. For friends and residents, it seemed in recent weeks that he had simply vanished — and there was a quite understandable reason for that.

He had lived in the apartment all his life with his mother, but the woman passed away less than a month ago, and her death hit the man very hard.

"Yes, well, he buried his mother, and after that, he didn't show up anymore. We didn't see him, didn't hear him," says Zhanna.

"Obviously, he had some grief because of all this, you know, stress. And that's how it all happened," says Valentin.

The death of his mother may have put an end to his desire to live, especially since both of the man's brothers had died two years ago. He constantly drowned his pain in alcohol.

"Well, from what... I think everyone knows. I think it was shmyga (alcohol). He even had a nickname — 'Tomato,'" says resident Liga.

"Well, I can't say that he drank here; I saw that he drank — it happened sometimes, but for him to drink here and show some temperament or something like that — that didn't happen. It was calm; he didn't bother us, we didn't bother him. We always greeted each other," says Valentin.

Valentin and other friends of the man could only bring him a loaf of bread or a bottle to the door of the apartment, and meetings always took place outside the home. This was because his mother never allowed his friends inside: "She was always a fighter, always so cheerful. She never complained — she always supported her son. Well, that's how it was. And when we talked to his mother, she said: how will he live without me. That was the last thing she said when I spoke with her."

And so it happened — the fifty-year-old man, without his mother, did not live long and has now joined her and his two brothers in eternity.
