The youngest victim was only 12 years old.
Moscow investigators have uncovered a series of rapes of women and underage girls committed more than 20 years ago. The suspect is a 73-year-old man who spent most of his life in prison and was released a year ago, the Investigative Committee (SK) reported.
The man has been charged with 25 counts of rape and sexual violence, as well as 11 robberies involving 16 victims. His victims were primarily underage girls, the youngest of whom was 12 years old and the oldest was 29.
The SK noted that the suspect committed the rapes in the 2000s. Initially, he operated in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow, and later in other areas of the capital. According to investigators, he stalked girls who were returning home from school alone, entered the building with them, and, ensuring there were no witnesses, attacked.
The identity of the man was established during the investigation of past crimes: Moscow investigators examined over 1,500 cases and identified the criminal's distinctive modus operandi. Additionally, the victims pointed out the same features, including a glassy gaze, missing teeth, and speech peculiarities.
During questioning, the suspect confessed to his guilt. However, investigators noted that he behaved withdrawn and did not expect to be identified. Important evidence included biological materials collected over 20 years ago.
"He categorically avoided the word 'rape' during investigative actions; he didn't like it. During confrontations, he was even more nervous than during the actual investigative actions with him. He did not look at the victims, <…> avoided eye contact, <…> did not communicate with them at all," said senior forensic investigator Alexandra Zakrzhevetskaya. The criminal case is currently being sent to court for substantive consideration.
