A Real Spy Caught in Latvia: And It Was Not the Counterintelligence Who Did It

The State Security Service (SSS) of Latvia, together with the Latvian Military Intelligence and Security Service (MISS), detained a citizen of Latvia on suspicion of gathering information at the request of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, the SSS reported.

During the investigation, it was established that a citizen of Latvia was receiving and transmitting information to the Russian military intelligence about private infrastructure in Latvia that could be used for aviation, the presence of NATO troops in the country, and various current events.

The suspect also transmitted information about the rules for acquiring prepaid SIM cards for mobile communication in Latvia and other data at the request of Russian special services.

On the night of October 18, the State Security Service (SSS) together with the Latvian Military Intelligence and Security Service (MISS) conducted investigative actions at two locations associated with the detained individual in Ventspils. Currently, the contents of the seized information carriers are being examined.

As a preventive measure, the suspect has been placed in custody.

It should be noted that the official counterintelligence (identification and detention of spies) in Latvia is carried out by the special service called the Bureau for the Protection of the Constitution (BPC). It seems they missed the Russian spy, and the situation had to be salvaged by competing special services – the SSS and MISS.
